Preparation
Preparation:
- Prepare the introduction according to the groups’ language level.
Materials needed:
- Print out the attached sheet with questions and cut into cards (number of sheets equal with the number of groups).
Instructions
Awareness of, and critical thinking about news topics and use of media are important parts of civic integration. Freedom of speech, source critisicm, the role and power of information in our modern society are essential topics to reflect on to become an integrated European citizen. Discussing and listening to other opinions (in a safe environment) on these subjects can be useful and create personal development and deeper reflection.
- The students are divided into small groups and are given a selection of conversation cards with questions (see examples below and add some more if you like).
- Put all cards on the table, facing down, and one person starts by picking up a card.
- The person who picks the card reads the question out loud and makes sure that everyone in the group understands it.
- He then tries to answer the question, before the others are invited to share their thoughts/opinions.
- Then the next person picks a new card and tries to answer the question, etc..
- Make sure there is enough time for each student to answer at least one card.
It can be a good idea to make groups with students having the same mother tongue, so that they can help each other understanding the texts and questions and expressing their opinions.
Variant
Menti or Kahoot are web resources that can be used as an alternative to the cardgame. Use questions from the cards and create your own digital game out of it.
Closing Up
An evaluation of the activity with the whole group, led by the facilitator, will be meaningful. Make sure to involve all participants in the evaluation.
